This Month’s Highlights

  • New Transportation Supervisor Hired

  • New Communications Supervisor Hired

  • School Start Time Report

  • Long Range Facilities Plan Update

New Transportation Supervisor Hired

The Board approved the hiring of Marco Sordi as Supervisor of Transportation.  Marco comes to us from the Upper Darby School District where he served as Supervisor of Transportation.  Marco is a familiar face in our district. He is a UHS Alumnus and previously worked in our transportation office as well.  Marco will join us in October.

Marie Wickersham will continue in her current role as Supervisor of Transportation until Marco is onboard and transitioned into his new role.  Marie will then return to her role as full-time Supervisor of Food Services.

New Communications Coordinator Hired

The Board approved the hiring of Christa Fazio.  Christa comes to us from from the Penn-Delco School District where she served as Communications Coordinator. Christa is expected to join us in October. Christa will replace Dave Listman who is retiring.

School Start Time Report

The administration conducted a review of new school start times and provided the Board a report this month.  The report indicates that students are on average getting more sleep - about 15 - 30 minutes. Surveys also show that students are somewhat more engaged, alert, and less sleepy in class.

Long Range Facilities Plan Update

This year's long range facilities plan has been a point of discussion in the district over the past several months.  The process actually began years ago - as a way to insure that the district's programs have the correct supporting facilities and to insure that routine maintenance needs are identified.  This long range view of needs and costs allows Boards over time to better manage the borrowing of capital and to develop “no surprises” budgets.

A routine update of the plan was presented in May of 2017 and at that time the Board voted to engage outside experts to facilitate discussion, evaluate needs and present to the Board and Administration options for consideration into the plan.  After the open bidding process the Board selected K&W to conduct the study. Since then K&W has provided a few interim updates at public Board meetings (the last one in June 2018).

The Board and Administration is expecting a final report from K&W (before the September Board meeting) that will include findings, options and high level costs.  This report will then serve as a starting point for Board and Administration consideration. Jeff Hellrung reiterated that the Board may choose to include some, none, all or some variation of the recommendations into the long range facilities plan.  John Sanville pointed out that some of the options put forward by K&W to date mirror items that are already in the plan.
