April Board Recap

Unionville-Chadds Ford School District
April 20th, 2018

April 2018

The Board came to a consensus and approved a few important items they have been discussing the past few months.

  • The much debated Code of Student Conduct policy was updated and now includes a rescission petition process for first offenders.

  • The teachers now have a new “Early Bird” contract that goes through 2023.  Hiring and retaining great teachers is among the top objectives for the Board and Administration.  The Board was pleased to develop a contract that is fair to all, balancing the need to be good stewards of the taxpayer’s dollar while properly compensating and respecting teachers.

  • The Canvas/Chromebook Initiative, a culmination of years of planning and testing at the middle school, will be rolled out to all high school students next year.  The fee to families was set at $50.00 a year, in line with other area schools and UCFSD experience with repair costs.

  • The Special Education Comprehensive Plan was approved.  The long range (3-year) plan is a state requirement that lays out how the district plans to fulfill the needs of students in this program (635 students).

Also discussed this month:

  • What is the Chester County Intermediate Unit (CCIU)?

  • Homework Policy, Guidelines, and Practices Update

  • School Safety Program - Say Something Program (Sandy Hook Promise)

  • 2018-19 Proposed Budget Book is now online and available for public review

What is the Chester County Intermediate Unit (CCIU)?

Pennsylvania's 29 intermediate units were established in 1971 by the Pennsylvania General Assembly to operate as regional educational service agencies to provide cost-effective, management-efficient programs to Pennsylvania school districts.  This month, the Chester County Intermediate Unit provided a presentation to our Board highlighting their services.

Homework Policy, Guidelines, and Practices Update

An internal review of homework policies and guidelines was recommended by Administration and the Board as a follow-up to feedback received from the School Start Time Committee. It was also noted as an area of focus on our District goals for 2017-2018.  A set of findings, recommendations, and next steps was presented to the Board this month.

Say Something Program (Sandy Hook Promise)

The Wellness Council presented their findings on a school safety program called Say Something.  The program teaches youth to recognize warning signs and signals, especially within social media, from individuals who may be a threat to themselves or others and then to Say Something to a trusted adult: parent, teacher, counselor, or clergy.  If they are unable or unwilling to do that, they will have the option to report their concerns anonymously on the anonymous reporting system. The next step is finalize a few more details and make a formal request to the Board later this year.

Proposed Budget Book is now online and available for public review

The proposed final budget for 2018-2019 was provided to the Board this month.  This kicks off a period of public review and Board discussion. There will be a public hearing on the budget on May 7th.  As proposed, the overall tax increase is 1.64% (the lowest increase in over 20 years). Individual property owner tax rates vary according to state algorithms of assessed property values.
