February Board Recap

Unionville-Chadds Ford School District
January 2nd, 2016

 February 2018

Board meetings typically begin with the superintendent’s report.  This month John took the time to reflect on the tragedy in Parkland Florida and provided insights into safety here in Unionville-Chadds Ford.  John organized his remarks by providing perspectives on three major questions.

  1. Do we have an emergency plan?

  2. Are we ready?

  3. Do we have a strategy moving forward?

The superintendent's report also included a retiree recognition ceremony.  This annual tradition is always touching and reminds us of the great work we engage in daily and the wonderful and caring staff that make a difference in our children’s lives.  This month we honor: Elaine McQuillin, Gail McQuiston, Jewell Thacher, Grace Vinci, and Logene Mattson.

This month’s highlights include:

  1. Measuring Our Success - A report to analyze student experience after graduation

  2. Discipline policy discussion - The Board continues to deliberate on the best way to modify the discipline policy

  3. Transportation Annual Report

  4. 2018-2019 calendar approved

Measuring Our Success - A report to analyze student experience after graduation

The goal of this report is to “Measure our Mission” with an eye towards improving our program by looking at student outcomes.  The Board was provided an update showing where students go after they graduate.  For the 94% who go on to college, we are able to track college acceptance rates, graduation rates and degrees earned.

This year’s report provided us quantifiable information that supports last year’s decision to eliminate decile reporting.

Discipline policy discussion - The Board continues to deliberate on the best way to modify the discipline policy

This conversation carries over from last month.  The recent suspensions at the high school has led the Board to reconsider the discipline policy.  Over the past month the Board has evaluated the current policy, investigated the most recent suspension process, evaluated legal counsel, and is now considering two options to amend the current policy.

Two policy alternatives have been drafted and are available on BoardDocs.  The Board is requesting input from the community over the next week.  Please send your input to communications@ucfsd.net.

Transportation Annual Report

In this update Marie Wickersham (department supervisor) provided the community with an excellent overview of this important service.  Marie presented data that highlights the department’s great safety and service record while at the same time managing operating costs.  A point of emphasis in this report is that the department is managed and operated by district employees who are vested in the community and our students.
