September 2017

We have implemented a new BoardDocs system that adds a deep level of transparency to Board processes.  All Board meeting agendas, documents, videos, minutes, policies, and guidelines are linked together, empowering the public to dive deeply into subjects of interest. The powerful search function opens up the archives going back several years.  The Boardroom and all deliberations are open for inspection. Click here to go to the BoardDocs home page.

Live streaming of all Board and committee meetings will continue and will be archived on YouTube  - The “U” Tube.

The monthly recap points you to discussion highlights and shared with all stakeholders in the district.  Meeting Recap archives

2017-2018 Board Goals

School Start Time Update

Before the end of the 2016-2017 school year, students were asked to fill out a sleep survey to serve as a baseline for our ongoing analysis of the impact of later school start times.  The survey is largely based on the well-regarded Cleveland Adolescent Sleepiness Questionnaire.  A survey results presentation was given by Kevin Long (UHS Math and AP Statistics teacher).  Our results tend to support findings of the AMA and other scientific organizations.  As students reach adolescence they tend to fall asleep later and are more tired during the school day.

The questionnaire serves as a baseline and will be given to students towards the end of the school year.  A comparison of the two surveys, as well as other data, will be used to evaluate the effectiveness and benefits of our move to later school start times.

Transportation Report - A thorough review and reworking of the bus routes was conducted over the summer.  The report shows the distribution of pick up times with a comparison to last year.  Pick up times in the morning for the majority (64%) of our students is 25 minutes or later.  Last year 1,598 students were picked up before 7:00 AM; this year only 59 are picked up before 7:00 AM.

Kajeek Mifi units have been obtained as part of a grant and will be piloted for one year.  These units can be used to provide internet access for students who don’t currently have internet access at home.  It can also be used by students who are participating in after school activities.  The units will be signed out from the middle school and high school libraries.  The pilot will be evaluated at the end of the grant year.  Technology Director Justin Webb presented the program.

All students in grades 6 through 9 now have Chromebooks.  The Canvas Learning Management System implementation has been successful and this year we want to answer the question about student devices at the high school.  The Board wants to know if students need their own device, a device they might bring from home, or borrow a device off carts.  There are pros and cons to each of these scenarios.   Students, parents, and teachers will be surveyed along with usage data and a recommendation will be made by the end of the year.

Route 82 Improvement Plan

The East Marlborough TownshIp came to the Board with a plan to redesign the area in front of the UHS and CFPMS campus. The goal of the plan is to improve safety with additional blinking lights and new traffic patterns.  The Board also expressed interest in having the State look at lowering the speed limit.

In this plan the township and school district would split the $180,000 needed for the development of a design.  The design would then be submitted for a federal grant that would pay for the work if approved.

2017-2018 Board Goals

Each year the Board establishes a list of top goals for the year.  The list for this year features the development of a wellness plan.  As a district, our mission is to empower our students for success in life and they will not only need a great academic foundation but also the character traits necessary for a changing world.

The continued success and sustainability of any great organization requires long range planning, prioritization, and alignment.  In addition to the wellness plan, the administration will develop and present a ten-year facilities plan, a 3-year technology plan, and a more formal leadership succession plan.
