Happy August!

Many of you are deep in "Summer-mode" but here, in downtown Unionville, we are counting down the days until the students return, with much still left to do.

The Board met last night, with some very interesting conversations.  Of particular note, the State has modified the law about volunteer clearances based on feedback from the public (good news for us).  There was also some very good strategic conversation about goals and direction for the district.

Board meetings now live on Youtube

The Communications department (Kim and I) welcome you to the 2015-2016 school year.  One new enhancement we'd like to share with you is that the Board is now on Youtube.  All Board meetings are now streamed live on our website and are available immediately on our new Youtube Channel.  The Board is committed to creating a transparent and participative environment, and we hope this new communication enhancement will make it easier for you to stay informed and participate in the process of educating the next generation.

PA legislature passes new volunteer clearances rules, addressing school districts' concerns

Below is a summary of the changes

  • No changes to all currently approved volunteer agreements until July 2016.

  • Two State clearances are required, but paid for by the State.  These two clearances need to be renewed every 5 years.

  • One new Federal fingerprint requirement for volunteers who have lived in the State for less than 10 years.

District goals for 2015-2016

Each year, the Board establishes goals for the coming year.  Some of the goals are continuations of themes; others are emerging goals. Goal achievement is a critical piece of the annual superintendent evaluation.

This year's goals fall into 4 major themes and tie directly into our mission and self image.  There was some very interesting and lively discussion about the direction of the district and its needs.

  1. Improving student experience

  2. Investing in people

  3. Embracing digital opportunities

  4. Improving school climate

Further discussion and action on 2015-2016 goals are scheduled for the next Board meeting.
