Staff Changes

The great staff we have is key to achieving our mission and the district has been hard at work this summer finding the very best teachers and support staff.  At this month's Board meeting, 10 new hires were approved and there were 23 reclassifications.

In August, Dr. Edward Mackel will be joining us as the interim principal at Unionville Elementary and Clif Beaver will officially take over at Pocopson Elementary.

The new assistant principal at Unionville High School, Amy Jenkins, will also be starting in August.

Read more details about this month's staff changes.

As you know, our students' day doesn't really end when the bell rings in the afternoon.  UCF offers a great variety of before and after school clubs, sports, and other student-centered activities, and these activities are staffed primarily through supplemental contracts.  Supplemental contracts are also used to compensate teachers who take on leadership roles as grade chairs, team leaders, and mentors.  The Board added to the supplemental contract list and published an update of all current contracts.

Check out the current list of supplemental contracts.

UHS Ranked 13th Best High School in the Country by Best Colleges.com

So many government agencies and public/private organizations are involved in evaluating school performance and our district continues to achieve very favorable rankings from them, moving from regional mention to a recognized leader in the state, and now garnering national attention.

Last week, we received notice from Best Colleges.com that they have placed Unionville High School at 13th in the country.  They use an extensive array of data types and sources focused on assessing the overall educational program rather than simply reporting on high stakes test results.  Standardized test scores were worth only 30% of their evaluation.  The rest of the evaluation includes criteria such as quality of teachers, teacher/student ratios, student/parent satisfaction surveys, course offerings, facilities, and safety.

One Book, One Unionville - Summer Reading - The Invention of Wings

Each year UHS students are required to read a book which is then studied across subject areas.  Staff and Board members read the One Book selection as well, leading to engaging conversation and cross disciplinary learning.

The Board encourages the community to read this year's One Book selection and participate in the conversation. This year's selection, The Invention of Wings by the author of The Secret Life of Bees,  is a fictionalized history of the Grimk√© sisters who were at the forefront of the abolitionist and women's rights movements.

Happy Reading!
