We welcome everyone to the start of the new school year.  The board got started in August, dealing with some very important issues.  Below are highlights of the meeting.

Board meetings are also video taped and are available online.

+ UHS Cafeteria
+ UHS Auditorium
+ Graduation requirement modifications
+ New teacher evaluations
+ Elementary School class sizes
+ PA Auditor General Report of UCF - 100%
+ After school activities bus
+ New UCF magazine to launch in November

+ UHS Cafeteria
As previously reported, the UHS cafeteria floor was in need of repairs.  The repairs were completed over the summer at a cost of $108,000.  As UHS recently underwent major renovations, a study was conducted to evaluate cause and responsibility.  It was found that 25% of the responsibility was attributable to design/construction and 75% to prior existing conditions.  The payment for repairs was then divided, 25% by the architect and contractor, 75% by UCF.

+ UHS Auditorium
Excessive rain noise has been reported in the auditorium.  The architect has made an initial report.  No definitive causes or remediation have been defined and a further study has been requested.

+ Graduation requirement modifications
The board approved modifications to graduation requirements including new Keystone tests and the elimination of the senior project.  These modifications comply with new state laws and are in effect starting with the class of 2017.

+ New teacher evaluations
The PA Act 82 Teacher Effectiveness Program calls for modifications to teacher evaluations.  UCF has concluded a two year teacher evaluation study that conforms to Act 82 requirements while providing for enhanced evaluations using a strategy called “Differentiated Evaluation”.  This strategy rotates teachers through various evaluation cycles including one that focus on their individual teacher development goals.

+ Elementary school class sizes
An additional first grade teacher was added to Pocopson to reduce class sizes, followed by a general conversation about the growing number of students at Pocopson.

John Sanville reported to the board that a full study of the situation will be undertaken, with recommendations presented to the board in March of 2015.  A “Plan to Plan” will be presented at the next board meeting on September 8th, laying out the evaluation process.  This process will involve all stakeholders and outside expertise will be engaged to analyze enrollment projections.

+ PA Auditor General Report of UCF - 100%
The PA Auditor General recently released results of its regularly scheduled performance audit.  The performance audit covers a 5 year period from 2009 to 2014.  The Auditor General reported 100% compliance.  The board thanked Bob Cochran and his staff for this outstanding report, noting that 100% compliance is a truly exceptional achievement.

+ After school activities bus
In response to parent requests, UCF has begun an after school activities bus run leaving Patton at 4:45 and leaving UHS at 5:50.  This fee based program is being provided at no cost to taxpayers.

+ New UCF magazine to launch in November

The board approved a contract with Brandywine New Media to produce a Quarterly UCF magazine that will be mailed to all homes in the district at no cost to taxpayers.  This UCF branded publication provides UCF with a valuable communication channel to all stakeholders.
